My family dog will be put to sleep tomorrow. Since Monday, her hip has been hurting her, making it to where she could hardly walk. She just turned 12 on August 8th. Her brother died a few weeks back of natural old age. My mom and dad came to a conclusion that they're going to put her to sleep. They just can't stand to see her suffer. I just have to understand that it's what's best for her, but I don't want to see her go. I really feel like shit right now. I mean I've known her for 12 years, ever since I was 4 years old. This is hurting me so much right now, as with my family. I just don't think I'll be able to handle it. She isn't just a pet. She never has been. She's a family member. This is going to be so hard. :(

HUGS! I'm sorry about this. Before I moved my dog Sudsy got put down.. she was 14 I think.. we had her son Ben a few years before I was born, he was a part of my life, a family member. 5 days before Christmas of '03 he was put down when he had a stroke at 5 am. I understand how it feels, but you're strong and we're all here for you. *HUGS* again. Hope you feel better..

My dog is 8 years old. She is a female black lab. She's blind, deaf, can't smell, and has hip problems. She runs into stuff all the time. It's so sad watching her try to get up after laying down. She really should be put down...:(

Aw, I'm sorry to hear that.
Putting a family pet to sleep always sucks. I mean, yeah, it's good to end their suffering, but it's still really sad. We had to put my first dog to sleep when I was in third grade.

I know how you feel. I'm the same way with my cats. Fortunately, he doesn't have to go just yet, but his sister wasn't as fortunate as him two years ago . . .

Losing a pet is really hard, especially the older they get.
Losing my cat Buster a few years back was one of the hardest things I've ever gone through, especially due to the circumstances. He used to beat the shit (literally) out of any cat but got old so lost to a stray and had a cut that got infected. Had to have two toes removed and from then just got worse and worse. In the end he was apparently sitting in the vet's cage just waiting to die so they had him put down.
That I can take, but the cunts didn't even tell us what they did with him. I use a different vet now.
My other cat Max was my best friend and he had to be put down last Christmas (merry indeed). I went through a bad bit of depression and it was Max who helped me pull through it, just because he knew I needed him. They're bloody smart, critters!
It's the bad thing about having pets, but it's been a year or two now and I'm picking up two kittens today so hopefully they'll grow up to be equally as bonkers, so although it's bad now, you'll feel better about it over time.
Feel for you though mate, we've all been there some way or other.

Eight years ago, I had to put my cat to sleep. I had raised him since he was only six weeks old. He was 12 when he develop tumors in his stomach and vet say he would not survive surgery. One afternoon, he let out a cry in terrible pain. At that point, decision was made. I miss him to this day and as he was my first pet, it was most especially hard.
Here is a poem that I had as a link that a friend gave me. It brought comfort.
I am sorry for your loss.
